Models of Masculinity
500 words
The life of a woman is always quite different to the life of a man. She may assume manly virtues and roles, but this assumption does not change the fundamentals, which are not even-handed. In one regard the life of most women is simpler; not easier, but by default better defined. Certain imperatives are imposed by nature. It is the absence of definition which makes masculinity challenging.
Until middle age the life of a woman is shaped by monthly rhythms and interruptions. More importantly, fertile women bear the babies, which they alone can breast-feed — babies which, through their imposing and immediate presence, demand to be cleaned and cared for. From this circumstance follows a preoccupation with matters domestic. By contrast it has fallen traditionally to men and especially fathers to introduce growing children into the wider world — a world which they are better positioned to shape.
Men are slightly more numerous and dispensable. Stronger, some take on dangerous tasks. Stronger, some learn martial arts. Whereas, by default, women are carers; men protect.
But it is not all men who protect. Some seek a surfeit of power while others submit to suchlike. One role for the men who do not seek power for its own sake is to counter those who do. It is excessive concentration of power which must be combatted — power itself is omnipresent and must be accepted like a stewardship when it is bestowed, not sought.
Combat is dangerous. It may involve sacrifice. Therefore, battles must be well-chosen. In our time it is the refusal to countenance masculine sacrifice, or to choose it wisely, which lies at the root of our malaise.
Not all men are suited to combat, or all kinds of combat. Those of a paternal bent might serve, or choose to serve, differently.
The assumption of a commonality to humankind, with the refusal to acknowledge differences, is itself subversive of manly virtues. Soulmates, allies and enemies must be distinguished.
In our time it has emerged that corruption is everywhere — in the judiciary, in the mass media, in politics, in science, in medicine, in education, and more. “More” includes sexual pervasions which we cannot comprehend. It also includes bizarre ways in which money is created and destroyed by central bankers. It is notable in respect of the last two that whistleblowers and their like are prone to die mysteriously.
Everywhere, absurdities and outright lies are propagated. Those who were supposed to be stewards of reason & logic, of common decencies, of truth, or just of their assigned profession, have surrendered to avarice, or to pressure, often minimal, and at the least have gone against their better judgement.
Without this compliance the corruption could never have obtained such a foothold. It must eventually devour itself, but until such time much harm can be done. Those who obstinately and persistently refuse the force of reason must expect to face force. For this, men of character, willing to risk sacrifice, will be needed.
